Soundproofing Hood for Machines and Aggregates by sta Group

A soundproofing hood encapsulates noise-intensive machines and aggregates directly at the source, making it one of the most effective technical measures in industrial noise control. Compressors, hydraulic power units, blowers and pumps generate sound levels of 80 to 105 dB(A), significantly exceeding the legal limits set by the German Noise and Vibration Occupational Safety Regulation (LärmVibrationsArbSchV) in many facilities. The typical noise levels of common industrial machines illustrate the need for action.

MachineSound Level
Reciprocating compressor85 to 100 dB(A)
Side channel blowerapprox. 94 dB(A)
Hydraulic power unit80 to 95 dB(A)
Industrial fanup to 110 dB(A)
Screw compressor75 to 95 dB(A)

Double-walled steel constructions filled with mineral wool achieve a noise reduction of 20 to 40 dB(A) depending on the design. The sandwich construction combines an outer steel sheet shell with a sound-absorbing mineral wool core and a perforated inner shell with a minimum of 30% open area. This can reduce the sound level of a compressor from 95 dB(A) to below 60 dB(A), resulting in a clearly perceptible reduction in noise exposure for all employees in the surrounding area.

Machine enclosures enclose the entire machine, while a soundproofing hood specifically encapsulates individual aggregates or sections. This flexible solution is particularly suited for retrofitting in ongoing operations where a full enclosure is not feasible due to space constraints or accessibility requirements. Both variants can be individually tailored to the respective machinery.

Soundproofing Hoods for Heat Pumps and Cooling Units

Commercial heat pumps and cooling units are among the most common noise sources on industrial premises and in production halls. Soundproofing hoods for heat pumps effectively reduce the noise emissions of these aggregates and ensure compliance with the TA Lärm (Technical Instructions on Noise Abatement) at site boundaries. Water circulation coolers, recooling systems and industrial air conditioning units generate sound levels of 75 to 95 dB(A), which are perceptible throughout the surrounding area without encapsulation.

Machine claddings and partial hoods are particularly suitable for outdoor heat pumps, as they ensure sufficient air circulation while reducing sound levels by 15 to 30 dB(A). Silencers in the ventilation openings prevent sound transmission, while the required heat dissipation continues to function unimpeded. Modular designs also allow flexible adaptation to different aggregate sizes.

Each soundproofing hood is individually tailored to the thermal and acoustic requirements of the respective aggregate. For cooling systems, the combination of effective sound insulation and unobstructed airflow is critical to the machine’s efficiency. sta Group captures all relevant parameters using a state-of-the-art 3D scanner and manufactures custom-fit solutions in-house with elements up to 6 m in length.

Employee Protection Through Industrial Soundproofing Hoods

Noise-induced hearing loss (occupational disease BK 2301) was the most common occupational disease in Germany in 2024, with 8,897 recognised cases. In production halls with unencapsulated compressors, blowers and hydraulic power units, employees are often exposed to continuous noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A). Industrial soundproofing hoods reduce noise directly at the source, making personal hearing protection unnecessary in many cases.

The German Noise and Vibration Occupational Safety Regulation (LärmVibrationsArbSchV) defines clear action thresholds for employers. From a daily noise exposure of 80 dB(A), hearing protection and instruction are mandatory. From 85 dB(A), a noise reduction programme must be established and noise areas must be marked. The exposure limit of 87 dB(A) must not be exceeded, taking into account hearing protection. Under the TOP principle (technical, organisational, personal), technical measures such as soundproofing hoods take priority over organisational and personal protective measures.

Reduced noise levels improve communication in the workplace, increase concentration and lower the error rate across the entire production process. Noise barriers complement the encapsulation of individual aggregates and create defined quiet zones within the production hall. Investments in soundproofing hoods pay off through reduced downtime, lower staff turnover and measurably higher productivity.

Soundproofing Hood for Commercial Air Conditioning Systems

Commercial air conditioning systems and central ventilation units generate sound levels of 75 to 95 dB(A) through their compressors and fans. A soundproofing hood for air conditioning systems effectively reduces these emissions without compromising the system’s efficiency. Particularly on rooftops and near office buildings or neighbouring properties, strict immission limits under the TA Lärm (Technical Instructions on Noise Abatement) apply, which are frequently exceeded without encapsulation.

The construction takes into account the specific requirements of refrigeration systems and central air conditioning units. Generously dimensioned silencers in the air ducts ensure the required volume flow while achieving noise reduction of up to 30 dB(A). Corrosion-resistant materials and powder coatings reliably protect the soundproofing hood against weather exposure during outdoor installation. Inspection hatches and removable wall elements provide quick access to all maintenance-relevant components.

Inside production halls, central air conditioning units and cooling aggregates also frequently require acoustic encapsulation. The waste heat from compressors must be dissipated in a controlled manner without compromising the sound insulation effect. Well-designed ventilation concepts with silencer sections and deflector baffles resolve this conflict of objectives and keep the overall noise level at the workplace within regulatory limits. All materials meet at least fire protection class A2 in accordance with DIN EN 13501.
